Following the launch of Mizuno’s Neo Zen 2, the Aspire team have been putting the latest model to the test. From marathon training and tempo runs to Parkrun and track sessions, here’s how Sam, Layla and Becky got on.
WHAT IS IT?
Mizuno’s Neo Zen 2 is a versatile everyday trainer built to balance cushioning, bounce and stability. Designed to handle a wide range of sessions, it combines a smooth, rockered ride with a snug, sock-like upper for a comfortable and responsive feel underfoot.
An update on the original Neo Zen, this latest version brings improved stability and comfort while retaining the bounce and smooth ride that made the first model stand out.
WHO IS IT FOR?
The Neo Zen 2 is designed for runners looking for a reliable all-round training shoe. It’s well suited to easy runs, recovery miles, tempo sessions and longer efforts, making it a strong option for anyone wanting one shoe that can do a bit of everything.
It’s also a great choice for runners who enjoy a cushioned feel but still want a shoe that feels lively and fun to run in.

LAYLA:
Getting a new pair of running shoes always feels a bit like Christmas. There’s that sense of excitement and anticipation to get out the door and try them straight away.
Although, in this case, the weather hasn’t exactly helped. It sounds ridiculous, but they look so fresh that I’ve been reluctant to take them out in the wet and risk ruining them too quickly!
That said, from the very first try, I got that feeling that these were something special. The cushioned, slightly rocking sensation of the sole, paired with the sock-like upper, made me just want to run. And however much I love running, that isn’t always the case.
I’m definitely more of a “how it feels” runner than a technical one, and that really came through with these. I felt genuinely excited to get out the door in them – whether that was a short jog around the block or pushing myself a bit more at Parkrun.
They delivered on both. Comfortable, responsive and, most importantly for me, enjoyable to run in. I’m not chasing speed at the moment, it’s more about consistency, enjoyment and feeling good, and these ticked all of those boxes.
I’ll leave the more technical breakdown to Sam (see below), but from my perspective, if you’re looking for a shoe that brings a bit of fun back into your running, these are well worth trying.

SAM:
I’ve built the Mizuno Neo Zen 2 into my trainer rotation since January and have been using at least twice every week for my road running. I’ve run up to 9 miles in them so far, and have been impressed with how comfortable they are and the bounce they provide for an everyday running shoe.
The latest model of the Neo Zen collection is a great all-round shoe for anybody looking for a versatile trainer. I’ve worn the shoe on easy and recovery runs, tempo runs and even for track training sessions. The shoe is a big step up from the first iteration of the Neo Zen in stability and comfort, while keeping a high level of bounce and smoothness.
My pair (a UK men’s size 9) fit true to size and at only £140, these are a great value purchase for a very reliable pair of running shoes!

BECKY:
I’ve worn the Mizuno Neo Zen 2 throughout my marathon training, which has given me the chance to test them across a real mix of sessions, distances and terrain.
I wasn’t totally convinced by the upper cuff and integrated tongue at first, but the more I wore them, the more I appreciated the secure, locked-in feel. I went up a size for a little extra room in the toe box, and that worked really well for me, with no rubbing or blisters.
From shorter tempo sessions to long runs, they’ve felt comfortable, supportive and smooth throughout. I’ve also worn them on roads and towpaths, where they’ve felt stable underfoot even in this winter’s endless wet and slippery conditions. As someone new to cushioned shoes, I’ve found them a very reliable training option.
I’m even planning to wear them for this year’s London Marathon, which probably says everything about how much I’ve liked them in training, even if they no longer look quite so box-fresh!
