July 2022: National children’s cancer charity, Cyclists Fighting Cancer, challenges Britain to be their best selves and break a personal best in their ‘PB for CFC’ challenge fundraiser this summer.

Whether it’s running your fastest ever 5k, deadlifting your goal weight or making the most of the summer sunshine and trying a new water sport for the first time – such as surfing, wild swimming, or SUP – set your own Personal Best challenge to get fit, keep active and help a child living with cancer.

The PB challenge can be completed solo or with a team for ultimate squad goals – or get the whole family involved over the school holidays, with an active PB challenge for your kids. 32.4% (2.3m) of children and young people in the UK do less than an average of 30 minutes of physical activity a day 1 so the PB challenge is a great way to feel good and do good simultaneously this summer.

Exercise has been shown in numerous scientific studies to be the single most effective way of improving both physical and mental wellness for people surviving cancer – this is also especially true for children and young people. CFC also strives to raise awareness of the benefits of activity and exercise for children living with and beyond cancer through professional expertise and a network of Cancer Exercise Specialists.

CFC also works to help children and young people living with cancer across the UK regain their physical fitness, improve mental wellness and reduce social isolation by giving them new lightweight bikes, specially adapted trikes, and tandems. Riding bikes enables children and young people to enjoy a fun, sociable activity with their families again – often after years of hospitalisation and disruption to their everyday lives.

Mike Grisenthwaite, Founder and CEO says: “Cyclists Fighting Cancer operates totally on the kind support of our amazing fundraisers, supporting us in our mission to raise awareness of the benefits of activity and exercise for children and award specially adapted bikes to children and families. Each bike is individually chosen with the child’s needs in mind with bespoke adaptions made to suit the child’s ability throughout their cancer journey. We can’t wait to see what PB’s our fundraisers smash this summer!

ABOUT CYCLISTS FIGHTING CANCER

Cyclists Fighting Cancer (CFC) is a national children’s charity, founded in 2005 to give new lightweight bikes, tandems and specially adapted trikes to children and young people living with and beyond cancer.

CFC encourages cycling as the best form of exercise based rehabilitation for children because it provides physical and mental health benefits in a low impact, fun, sociable and exciting way.

CFC also funds a network of Cancer Exercise Specialists who work closely with the twenty-one paediatric oncology units around the country to promote activity, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle . Adopting a healthy active lifestyle at an early age means these practices will be carried on into adulthood, establishing good life-long habits.

Since 2005, CFC has supplied over 8,000 bikes to children living with cancer, as well as their families, enabling them to enjoy cycling as an activity together, often after years of hospitalisation and upheaval.
