From a cut-up garden hose in 2010 to a highly technical, premium running shoe in 2018, the many phases of the Cloudsurfer introduced a young, Swiss upstart to the world and turned it into the fastest growing brand in running.
ZURICH, SWITZERLAND – Eight years ago, World Duathlon Champion and multiple Ironman winner Olivier Bernhard was looking for a new running sensation; one that would allow a soft, cushioned landing to minimize impact on the ground but a hard, speedy push-off to still beat that last competitor to the finish line.
Bernhard partnered up with a like-minded Swiss engineer, cut up pieces of a common garden hose and glued them onto a traditional racing flat. When tested, the pieces of garden hose provided a plush, cushioned landing but as they transitioned from heel to toe, the pieces collapsed, allowing a hard surface to push off of. This was the exact running sensation Bernhard was craving.
What started as a very unlikely prototype went on to sell 4 million shoes worldwide in just seven years. On November 1st, 2018 On launched the fourth version of its classic shoe.
The comfort of a training shoe with the speed of a racing flat. That has always been and always will be the beauty of the Cloudsurfer. With its patented CloudTec system, runners will experience softer landings and more explosive take-offs than ever before. Wet roads? No problem. With a newly developed ‘zig zag’ pattern on the outsole, grip and traction are a given.
Its uniquely engineered mesh puts breathability and support exactly where the foot needs them. Combined with a second layer of EVA cushioning at the heel, the Cloudsurfer is second-to-none when it comes to comfort. A neutral running shoe, the Cloudsurfer has a weight of 11.6oz and a 6mm heel-toe offset.
“The Cloudsurfer is what initially put us on that map,” says On Co-Founder and Head of R&D, Olivier Bernhard. “People thought it was gimmicky at first, but soon realized it was a truly unique technology and sensation – something the running industry was missing. Eight years later, the shoe still sells and people all around the world write to us saying how much they love it.
“This new version of the shoe will maintain that same sensation that runner’s love but with more premium materials in the upper for enhanced breathability, more Clouds on the outsole for a smoother transition from heel to toe, and a Speedboard in the midsole that lays across the whole shoe providing more stability all-around”.
The all-new Cloudsurfer is now available online and in retail stores.
